Ares Vallis
Pathfinder · July 1997 · on Mars, 19.13° N, 33.22° W
Where the little Sojourner rover drove, the first wheels on another planet. Pathfinder filmed the first blue Martian sunset.
What is there
Mars Pathfinder lander (Lander, NASA/JPL)
Bounced down inside airbags on 4 July 1997, then opened its three petals and stood up. Named the Carl Sagan Memorial Station, it sent back 16,500 pictures and the weather until contact was lost on 27 September 1997.
Sojourner rover (Rover, NASA/JPL)
The first wheels on another planet: a 10.6 kg rover that drove about 100 m in 83 sols, studying rocks the team named Barnacle Bill, Yogi and Scooby-Doo. Shown about where it was last seen, beside the lander.
Stand at Ares Vallis in Stellingo: the ground is shaped from orbiter elevation maps and photos, the hardware is placed where it really is, and the sky above — the Sun, the Earth, the stars — is the real one, at any date you choose.
