Vastitas Borealis
Phoenix · 2008 · on Mars, 68.22° N, 125.75° W
Far in the north, where Phoenix dug up water ice just under the soil. In summer the Sun barely sets.
What is there
Phoenix lander (Lander, NASA/JPL)
Landed on 25 May 2008, the farthest north any craft has come down on Mars. Its arm scraped away the soil to bright water ice, which vanished from the trench in days, and its laser saw snow falling from clouds. It fell silent as winter came; in 2010 an orbiter's photos showed its solar arrays broken under the ice.
Stand at Vastitas Borealis in Stellingo: the ground is shaped from orbiter elevation maps and photos, the hardware is placed where it really is, and the sky above — the Sun, the Earth, the stars — is the real one, at any date you choose.
