Spirit's last stop
"Troy", beside Home Plate · 2009 · on Mars, 14.60° S, 175.53° E
Where Spirit got stuck in soft sand at "Troy", beside the volcanic plateau Home Plate in Gusev crater, after six years on Mars.
What is there
Spirit (Mars Exploration Rover, NASA/JPL)
Spirit drove 7.7 km and found signs of ancient hot springs. In May 2009 its wheels broke through a crust into soft sand at a spot the team called Troy; after months of trying it could not get out, and it fell silent in March 2010, still tilted where it got stuck.
Stand at Spirit's last stop in Stellingo: the ground is shaped from orbiter elevation maps and photos, the hardware is placed where it really is, and the sky above — the Sun, the Earth, the stars — is the real one, at any date you choose.
