Von Kármán crater
Chang'e 4 · January 2019 · on the Moon, 45.44° S, 177.60° E
The first landing on the far side of the Moon. The Earth never rises here, ever: it is always on the other side of the Moon. This is why China first had to put a relay satellite out beyond the Moon to talk to its lander. A superb place for stars.
What is there
Chang'e 4 lander (Lander, CNSA)
The first spacecraft to land on the far side of the Moon, on 3 January 2019. Its experiments included a small sealed garden in which a cotton seed sprouted: the first plant to grow on the Moon. It has worked through years of two-week nights, warmed by a radioisotope heater.
Yutu-2 rover (Rover, CNSA)
The longest-lived rover on the Moon. Shown where it stood when it and the lander photographed each other in January 2019; it has since driven about 1.6 km across Von Kármán crater, a few metres each lunar day.
Stand at Von Kármán crater in Stellingo: the ground is shaped from orbiter elevation maps and photos, the hardware is placed where it really is, and the sky above — the Sun, the Earth, the stars — is the real one, at any date you choose.
