Our home galaxy, seen from the inside: a flat disc of hundreds of billions of stars.
The misty band across a dark sky is the combined glow of countless distant stars in the disc of our galaxy. The dark lanes are clouds of dust blocking the light behind them.
It's easy to see from a dark site but washed out by city lights.
